Recently an online friend of mine was kicked out of a Target store for breastfeeding in the electronics aisle. She wasn’t just kicked out; they called the cops on her!
News article here or here
You can also read about it on a few breastfeeding blogs, here and here.

What is not mentioned in the articles is that according to the Mary Martinez, the security guard lied about public breastfeeding being illegal and then identified himself as a police officer. Last time I checked, impersonating a police officer was a crime. Edited 12/3/09 to clarify timeline

UPDATED 12/3/09: I also want to point out that Mary says she was nursing discreetly and was fully covered. For me, personally, it doesn't make a difference, but I realize that for others, it might.

Now if this was just an incident of an overzealous ignorant employee, I wouldn’t be this upset. What upset me was Target Corporation’s statement on the issue:
[the] situation escalated to a point where we were concerned for the safety of our guests, so law enforcement was called.
I sent Target an email notifying them that until they issued a formal written apology to Mary Martinez and reprimanded the security guard at fault, I would be boycotting Target and encouraging everyone I knew to do the same.

Target sent me a disappointing, though not surprising response stating that they have “a long-standing practice that supports breastfeeding in our stores.” But included that “This specific situation escalated to a point where we were concerned for the safety of our guests, so law enforcement was called. We regret the incident in our store and will continue to provide a shopping environment that respects the needs of all guests, including nursing mothers.”

When asked about what escalation Target was referring to, Ms. Martinez said,
“There was no escalation, that is why I wanted them to retract and amend their statement. [The target representative on the phone] apologized, and admitted Target's wrong doing; I want a press release stating so.”

Seems reasonable to me.

I responded back to Target with another email restating my boycott.

This is no isolated incident either. Target stores have a history of trying to kick nursing mothers out. The corporate statement always claims that they support breast feeding in their stores. If this is true, maybe they should actually notify the store management.

If you think Target is out of line, let them know!

My email back to Target

If Target truly supported breastfeeding in it's stores, then your official statement would have indicated such instead of blaming the victim. By falsely claiming that the Mary Martinez "situation escalated to a point where [you] were concerned for the safety of our guests" you are implying that a young mother and her police officer husband got belligerent and violent in your store. There was no escalation, that is a flat out lie.Target has verbally admitted to being wrong, but publicly continues to accuse Mrs. Martinez of "escalation. Your corporation has chosen to back an ignorant employee over someone who likely represents a large portion of your clientele, myself, and most of my friends included. The security guard identified himself as a police officer, even going as far as to give a precinct number. Impersonating a police officer is a CRIME. Your employee committed a crime for the sole purpose of harassing and discriminating against a nursing mother.

I have 3 children who attend a school that requires uniforms. This year, the vast majority of their uniforms were purchased at Target. It looks like next year I will get them elsewhere. Until Target issues an official retraction and amendment of their false statement, and reprimands the security and management involved I will continue to boycott your stores. I am encouraging others to do the same by spreading the word to , not only, my friends and family, but also to the other parents at my children's school, my local La Leche League chapter, my local MOMS Club chapter, and anyone I speak to who has young children.

Target's email response 1

Dear Naomi Barnes,

Thanks for asking us about breastfeeding in our stores. As a family-oriented
retailer, Target has a long-standing practice that supports breastfeeding in our
stores.

We want everyone to feel comfortable shopping at Target. Guests who choose to
breastfeed in public areas of the store are welcome to do so without being made
to feel uncomfortable. Additionally, we support the use of fitting rooms for
women who wish to breastfeed their babies, even if others are waiting to use the
fitting rooms.

We strive to provide a distraction-free environment for all our guests,
including nursing moms. This specific situation escalated to a point where we
were concerned for the safety of our guests, so law enforcement was called. We
regret the incident in our store and will continue to provide a shopping
environment that respects the needs of all guests, including nursing mothers.

At Target, we work hard to provide you with an enjoyable shopping experience. If
you ever have concerns during your visit, please visit the Guest Service Desk
and ask to speak to the Guest Service Team Leader. They'll make every attempt to
resolve the issue while you're in the store.

We appreciate the opportunity to share this information with you.

Sincerely,

Holly
